The Nice Guys (2016) – 4/5

With an old school but unique kind of humor, The Nice Guys is a refreshing detective comedy/drama with a lovable and talented cast. The world has seen this kind of movie before, a 70’s movie, where down-to-earth humor, an intelligent script, and realistic sets are used in the absence of overwhelming effects and recycled material. The Nice Guys is a mixture of these elements; the result will leave you charmed.

If there is something surprising about this film is the cast. Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling, also known as the tough, action guy and the charming romantic-comedy guy. The chemistry of their usual character personalities while they play detectives solving a murder mystery case, develops in an unexpectedly beautiful way. The laughs for the most part are natural, with a few exceptions from Russell Crowe’s dry attempts.. There is a reason why his specialty are serious dramas and thrillers, and this film shows it; comedy is just not his thing.

However, the dialogue is funny and brilliant. The movie industry does not make movies like this anymore. Without relying on cheap and cliche humor, director Shane Black’s formula seems to be working. This movie has not only shown his ability of directing the perfect story, but also his ability of developing true chemistry between complete opposites.
