Similarly to many of Michael Moore’s films, Where To Invade Next focuses on everything the United States lacks in comparison to other countries and completely ignores its strengths. However, that is the purpose of this movie; to show the American people why we are not the best country in the world.. And it couldn’t have been done in a better way.
Starting with Italy and following with countries such as France, Slovenia, Finland, Norway, Tunisia, Portugal, and Iceland, Moore mocks the idea that there is actually an ‘American Dream’. Because truly, there isn’t one. Not when we see the four-week vacation Italians receive per year, the nutritional meals students are served in France, the debt-free students from Slovenia, or the humanity from police officers in Portugal, where drug consumption is not a crime but a reason to be provided with rehab.
Where to Invade Next teaches us that the United States has it all wrong. We work people to the bone without paying attention to their happiness, wellbeing, or productivity. We say we care about our students, when they are being served horrible meals at school and are left with thousands of debt when they finally go out into the ‘real world’. We pride ourselves in a constitution that calls for ‘no cruel and unusual punishment’, yet we agree to give life sentences and death penalties. We could care less about our inmates, their inability to vote, their sometimes inhumane treatments, their struggle to come back into the world after years of being locked up, or the thousands of money that are spent in a person that was holding a few grams of marijuana. And with today’s politics being the way they are, I can say we belong to a very messed up country. But that is another topic for another time.
Where To Invade Next is the shocking reality that we are not what we preach. While other countries are improving with the ideas and principles the United States was founded under, we are coming to a stop. Whether you agree or not, and whether you think we are the greatest country in the world or not, Michael Moore will make you think about our current situation. Hopefully, it will be eye opening and most importantly, change the minds of many.
